UNC Students Encourage Peers To Go Smoke-Free

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A huge jar of cigarette butts helped to underscore a message today on the UNC campus.

It took members of the Tobacco Cessation Advocates group just one hour to fill a large plastic jar with cigarette butts, on a campus that is largely smoke-free.

The group says college is where a lot of smokers start, so they used today's Great American Smokeout as an opportunity for education and encouragement.

"We're just kind of walking around promoting the message that yes, it is hard to quit, but there are so many benefits to quitting," said Sandy Zucarello, UNC Tobacco Cessation Advocates. "You're adding years to your life, you're preventing so many diseases that could be caused by smoking."

Students also gave out a list of restaurants and bars in Chapel Hill that are smoke-free.
