Orange County Story

U.S. Airforce Thunderbirds To Fly Over Kenan Stadium

Credit: AP Online
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Just prior to the kickoff of the UNC/NC State game tomorrow, two United States Air Force T-38 Thunderbird jets will fly over Kenan Stadium, barring weather or schedule changes. The jets will be flying low and be quite loud. There will not be any practice runs prior to the actual fly-over on Saturday.

These Thunderbird jets are based in Mississippi. The lead jet will be flown by pilots from Greensboro and Kitty Hawk. The pilots of the other jet are from Maryland and Georgia.

Whether or not you are attending the game, you might want to come downtown and to campus to enjoy Tar Heel Town. The noon kick-off makes it a perfect day to use the Touch Downtown bus service which allows you to "park and ride" and visit campus and downtown both before and after the game. You can ride the bus from two parking lots along Martin Luther King Boulevard: one lot is at 725 Martin Luther King Blvd. across the street from Fosters and the other is the "P" lot across from the YMCA. The buses from these lots will begin running 3 hours before kick-off and continue for another three hours after the game.

I hope these two schools are going to reimburse the federal treasury for this expensive little display!  I think it costs about a ga-zillion dollars an hour to operate just one; they’re gonna have two!
But gotta have that sensationalism!  Shootfire, if folks want to see a LOT of them fly, just join the Airforce or Navy (and you’ll get sick of ‘em!).

I think there is a slight identification problem…
The USAF Thunderbirds currently fly F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft. The team used to fly the T-38A Talon (1974 - 1982), but that aircraft was replaced by the F-16 at the start of the 1983 airshow season.
Incidentally, Ron Maness, a 1969 UNC graduate, flew with the USAF Thunderbirds in the Number 2 position (Left Wing) from October 1977 to January 1980.
    Keep ‘em Flying!
