North Carolina's Ty Lawson has been named ACC Player of the Week, while Wake Forest's Al-Farouq Aminu earned ACC Rookie honors.
Lawson averaged 16 points, 7.3 assists and 0.7 turnovers in three games while leading the Tar Heels to the EA Sports Maui Classic championship. Lawson was named MVP after helping UNC set a tournament record for margin of victory in wins over Chaminade (by 45 points), Oregon (by 29) and eighth-ranked Notre Dame (by 15). Lawson scored 48 points in the those three wins while turning the ball over just twice and handing out 22 assists. Lawson added 22 points, eight assists, one turnover and a career-high five steals in Sunday night's 116-48 win over visiting UNC Asheville while playing just 21 minutes. Lawson shot 70.6 percent from the floor (24-for-34) in last week's four games.
Aminu helped lead Wake Forest to a 4-0 record last week, averaging 12.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. During Wake's 3-0 run to the 76 Classic championship, Aminu averaged 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. In the Deacons' 87-74 title game defeat of Baylor, Aminu posted his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Aminu opened the tournament with 14 points and seven rebounds vs. Cal State Fullerton. He made 6-of-9 from the floor in the win. Aminu followed with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and eight rebounds vs. UTEP
