Southern Village welcomes spring with a Children's Safety Fun Day. Events will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 21st in the rear parking lot at the Mary Scroggs Elementary School in Southern Village, when the Chapel Hill Police Department will host a Bike Rodeo. The event will feature a bike safety course which will be set up in the parking lot. The Bike Rodeo will last until noon. The program is designed for children of elementary school age, who are encouraged to bring their bicycles so that they can drive through the course, practicing the safe bike riding techniques that the police officers will be teaching. The event is designed to be fun as well as educational. It is open to the public and is free of charge.
From 10:00 until 2:00, the Orange County Sheriff's Office will be on the Village Green on Market Street in Southern Village offering child fingerprinting. From 12:00 noon until 2:00, there will be additional activities on the Green, including refreshments, bike decorating, crafts activities, and safety handouts. Our special guest will be Troo, an animated character from the UNC Injury Prevention program who teaches important safety habits with fun as a key component.
A highlight of the afternoon will be a Children's Safety Puppet Show, "Johnny Joins the Fire Department", presented jointly by the Chapel Hill Museum and the Chapel Hill Fire Department on the stone stage in the Village Green beginning at 1:00 pm. An additional highlight will be a drawing immediately following the puppet show for a brand new child's bicycle provided by Performance Bicycle. Tickets for the drawing will be sold at the event for $1.00 each, and proceeds will be donated to the Chapel Hill Youth Council. The purpose of the youth council is to offer an organization through which the youth of our community can benefit both themselves and their community, with an emphasis on service learning. The proceeds from this project will go towards their "Teddy Bear Program" which benefits traumatized youth in Chapel Hill.
Mary Scroggs Elementary School can be reached by driving south on 15-501 from downtown Chapel Hill or the University, and making a right hand turn at the light at Market Street, which is the main entrance to Southern Village. Driving on Market Street, as you wind around Harrington Bank, make the first left at Kildaire Street, which leads directly to the school.
Please visit the Southern Village website www.southernvillage.com for complete details and an announcement in the event of severe weather.
