CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Kidzu is a place to learn and play and it has all kinds of activities for children and parents to enjoy together.

It's the very reason David Kennedy, Durham resident, was hooked the first time he visited with his kids about five years ago.

"There's a variety of things, so much more than you can do at home," Kennedy said.

But since day one when Kidzu moved into its Franklin Street location in 2004, Cathy Maris, Kidzu Executive Director, said she knew the museum wouldn't stay at its current location forever.

"We knew we would start small and plan big and we needed to find our right site to make a permanent home," said Maris.

That permanent home will be on top of the Wallace Parking Deck on Rosemary Street, an open space the town also uses for local events and activities. The new location will be about 15,000 square feet compared to just 2,700 square feet in the current on. Marris said the added space is much needed.

"It will allow us to serve many thousands more visitors, it will allow us to maximize the use of the museum so we can have field trips, birthday parties and art programs all happening at once," said Maris.

She also said the new museum will draw even more visitors, many of whom stay to shop at local businesses and restaurants downtown.

"We bring about 30,000 visitors every year to the museum and that number will increase substantially so we think it will invigorate our downtown and bring money to the community," said Maris.

There's no timeline yet when construction will begin. Kidzu is in the process of raising money to construct the new facility, which will cost about $6 million total. It's slated to be completed sometime between 2013 and 2014,
