CARRBORO, N.C. -

Crews spent more than an hour cleaning up an overflow of untreated wastewater in Carrboro after heavy rains Wednesday.

At about 9:30 a.m., an OWASA crew responded to the overflow near Rosewalk Lane and Berryhill Drive. It was stopped at about 11 a.m.

The overflow occurred when stormwater entered an OWASA sanitary sewer during heavy rain. OWASA estimated the volume of the overflow was about 3,600 gallons based on the known duration of the spill.

OWASA reported the spill to the NC Division of Water Quality, which is reviewing the matter. The information above is provided in accord with OWASA policies and House Bill 1160, enacted by the General Assembly in July, 1999, which requires distribution of news releases when a wastewater spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
