ORANGE COUNTY, N.C.

CHAPEL HILL—Loren Vitter of the Aveda Institute Chapel Hill, right, presents a $4,500 check to Maggie Salinger of The Full Belly Project. A school of cosmetology and skin care, the Aveda Institute raises money each month for charity through its tip for a cause program. In lieu of tips for services, guests can donate to a charity chosen monthly by the Institute staff. Most often, the charity is locally based, and have included worthy causes such as The Women's Center, Project Homeless Connect, Flashes of Hope, the Inter-Faith Council and the Duke based MBA Games. The Institute also raises money through tips each year for Autism, the MS Society, Triangle Land Conservancy and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Since the Aveda Institute opened its doors in 2005, more than $240,000 has been raised for charity. The Full Belly Project, founded in Wilmington, designs and distributes income-generating agricultural devices to improve the life and relieve hunger in developing countries.
