CHAPEL HILL, NC- (October 22, 2009) The Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was recognized with the 2010 Named Grant Award by Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test at the 14th Annual Gathering of Friends in Greensboro on October 22, 2009. "The Tar Heel Trot" benefits Kappa's main philanthropy, Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. Each year, for over a decade, the proceeds from the Tar Heel Trot are donated by the sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma to Friends in support of the mission of finding a biological test to detect breast cancer in its earliest pre-tumor stages. There is a very special connection between the Epsilon Gamma Kappas and Friends because one of their alumnus, Martha Kaley, founded the organization after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The naming of a grant from Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test is an honor that has only been designated on five occasions over the fourteen year history of the organization. This honor is the most prestigious recognition that can be awarded by this non-profit organization. The Tar Heel Trot regularly registers several hundred participants and has raised as much as $14,000 in one day!
