Irregardless Café Honored as Green For-Profit Business Leader of the Year

Raleigh Institution Selected for Triangle Business Journal Green Award

Raleigh, N.C.—The Irregardless Café is pleased to announce that Arthur Gordon, owner and head chef, has been selected as the Green For-Profit Business Leader of the Year for the Triangle Business Journal's Green Awards. The award was presented October 23rd during an awards luncheon honoring all Triangle Business Journal Green Award winners.

In its second year, the Triangle Business Journal Green Awards recognize Triangle leaders who have embraced and successfully incorporated sustainability efforts into their businesses and communities.

"Next year we will celebrate our 35th anniversary, and we couldn't be more pleased to be recognized for the fundamentals that have sustained Irregardless over the years," said Gordon. "People appreciate that we've been a green, local restaurant for several generations. Caring for the well-being of our environment and patrons has been at the core of our business since we opened in 1975."

Gordon opened the Irregardless Café in 1975 with a sustainability mission and vision for providing healthy options for the community, his employees, and the environment. From day one, Gordon has been committed to supporting the local economy, purchasing local foods whenever possible and showcasing local musicians every night. The Irregardless Café has been recognized in the restaurant industry for its leadership in improving the quality of life of its patrons and the community.

In addition to offering local, organic produce and hormone-free meats, the Irregardless recently partnered with a Knightdale farmer to collect kitchen food scraps to feed his hogs and divert food waste from the landfill. The restaurant has had a progressive recycling program for decades, and in 1984, the Raleigh institution became the first completely non-smoking establishment in the state. Twenty five years later, all North Carolina restaurants and bars will be smoke-free by January 2010.
