ACKLAND Ackland Art Museum l The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill For immediate release 03/15/10 Carolina for Kibera Presents Illuminated Exhibition of Photography on the Ackland Lawn CHAPEL HILL, NC – In collaboration with Carolina for Kibera (CFK), the Students for CFK, and Student Friends of the Ackland, the Ackland Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is pleased to host the exhibition Kibera Illuminated: Lives in East Africa's Largest Slum (March 18 and 19, 6:00-10:00 PM), an outdoor evening installation showcasing photographs taken by adolescent girls living in Kibera, the largest slum in East Africa. Carolina for Kibera is an affiliated entity of UNC-Chapel Hill based at the Center for Global Initiatives that inspires and nurtures youth leaders in the slum of Kibera, Kenya, through a unique model of participatory development. Kibera is often portrayed in the media as a sprawling slum plagued by unemployment, HIV/AIDS, endemic poverty, and violence. While Kibera's challenges are real, there are young people in Kibera ready to lead with ambition and compassion. With no formal training and simple point-and-shoot cameras, a team of girls from Carolina for Kibera's Binti Pamoja Program set out to capture images of Kibera as they see it. Kibera Illuminated: Lives in East Africa's Largest Slum presents these singular images, allowing the viewer to encounter East Africa's largest slum through the unique perspective of these amazing young women. Kibera Illuminated will be on display on the front lawn of Ackland Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19, from 6:00-10:00 PM. There will be a reception at 6:00 PM both nights featuring Kenyan-inspired food and speakers from Carolina for Kibera sharing their approach to community development and the power of participatory photography. Both evenings, the Museum will remain open until 8:00 PM. Selected photographs from the exhibition are included in the book LightBox: Expressions of Hope From Young Women in the Kibera Slum of Nairobi, which will be available for sale. Carolina for Kibera recognizes the youth of Kibera as resilient, wise, innovative, and eager to lift their community above the poverty and violence that plagues it. CFK's long-term initiatives provide youth opportunities to learn and serve while addressing a wide range of community needs including healthcare, education, waste recycling, and reduction, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, and girls' empowerment. CFK's model of fighting abject poverty and preventing ethnic, gender, and religious violence has been internationally recognized, earning awards as a Time Magazine and Gates Foundation "Hero of Global Health" and the 2008 Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation's Reflections of Hope Award. ACKLAND Ackland Art Museum l The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Students for CFK is a student group that supports CFK's initiatives on campus and raises awareness about poverty and the power of participatory development. Student Friends of the Ackland is a student-run arts organization that hosts cultural, social, and professional events in and around the Ackland. Come enjoy the fun. Bid on awesome auction items, eat delicious food, and join in the laughter, while helping the cats and dogs of Chatham Animal Rescue and Education, Inc. (CARE). On Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from 6:00 â" 9:00 PM, the volunteers of CARE in partnership with the General Store Café (GSC), will hold our 7th Annual Burrito Bash fundraiser with both live and silent auctions at the GSC, just off the traffic circle in downtown Pittsboro. CAREâs mission is to promote the health and safety of all Chatham County cats and dogs. We play a crucial role in reducing the number of unwanted animals that end up being euthanized in the shelter by operating a $20 spay/neuter program for Chatham County residents with income under $40,000, as well as free surgeries for Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. Our foster volunteer caregivers open their homes and their hearts to help make animals more adoptable while they await their forever homes. Money earned through your participation in this engaging event goes directly to funding animal care. A $15 donation on this special Tuesday night provides admission and a GSC dinner burrito with all the fixinsâ. Live and Silent Auction items feature a range of experiences, artwork, and gift-certificates, including an Outer Banks beach week, an Ocean Isle Beach week, a Lake Lure Mountain getaway weekend, metal sculptures, original paintings, pottery, woodworking, therapeutic massages, garden items, as well as many more magnificent finds. Dinner and Silent Auction begin at 6:00 PM (Silent Auction closes at 7:15 PM); Live Auction begins at 7:30 PM. Auction donors are listed on CAREâs website. Discounted tickets for $12 are available to all when purchased in advance either through www.chathamanimalrescue.org or in person at McIntyreâs Books in Fearrington, the General Store Café in downtown Pittsboro, and The Natural Pet Health Store in Bear Creek. For more information, e-mail burritobash@chathamanimalrescue.org or call Karen Sirls at (919) 542-5757.
