CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

The students at UNC, Duke, and Bennett continue to prove that students in universities can be catalysts for global change. Millennium Village Project, an initiative started in 2006, aims to raise $1.5 million for a village in Marenyo, Kenya. More information specifically on the project is below.

The students have currently raised approximately $1.2 million through donations and fundraising at the three schools. There is a major push to wrap up this year, finally reaching the $1.5 million goal.

To make this happen, the students have organized a week of events raising awareness and money. The first event occurs Monday: Cheza Kwa Tumaini, or Dance for Hope, is a performance event featuring UNC student groups, including the Loreleis and Bhangra Elite. MVP will also be holding a drawing for basketball tickets, ipod touch, PSP, and over $100 in gift certificates from local businesses. Entry into the event is $5.

Help prove that every individual can make an impact in working towards global change, and come out to Cheza Kwa Tumaini! The event is a great for families, with great prices, and poverty awareness.

The UNC-Duke-Bennett Millennium Village Project aims to raise $1.5 million by June 2008 in the first student-led sponsorship of a Millennium Village as a tangible way of demonstrating students’ commitment to the international effort to eradicate extreme poverty. We the students of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and Bennett College, as members of a greater global community, feel a responsibility to dedicate our energy and resources to empower those in extreme poverty, and to demonstrate the role of universities as catalysts for global change.Furthermore, we see this as a unique opportunity to unite students, faculty, and community members to engage in an academic dialogue to critically assess and improve sustainable development strategies such as the Millennium Village model. We hope that the UNC-Duke-Bennett Millennium Village Project can set a precedent for the involvement of other universities, and ultimately create a generation of students committed to ending extreme poverty.
