An Orange County Deputy remains in stable condition at a local hospital after being stabbed while serving an involuntary mental commitment order.
Deputies went to 6201 Cousins Drive in Efland, N.C. looking for William Alston III, as ordered by the magistrate's office. Deputies were unable to locate Alston during the two visits to the home on Wednesday evening.
"At 11 p.m. Wednesday night, deputies received a call that Alston had returned home. Deputies went to the home to serve the order and take Alston to UNC-Memorial Hospital as the order directed," stated a press release from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies went into the home and spoke with Alston and tried to get him to with them. Alston then became upset and according to the press release, deputies had to wrestle him to the floor.
As the deputies wrestled with Alston, he pulled out a knife from his coat pocket and stabbed a deputy in the left side.
Alston was handcuffed and the family assisted the injured deputy until EMS crews arrived.
The identity of the injured deputy is not being released. He sustained serious injuries and remains at the hospital.
Orange County Sheriff's Office said the investigation continues.
