So speakers at his memorial service Thursday afternoon at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh kept the crowd laughing.
"He was a politician who knew politics was about building people up and helping folks. Jim Long fought for the average working man and family and tried to help keep insurance rates affordable for every person. He worked for everyones well being," said Goodwin.
More than 8-hundred mourners got a good laugh when current Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said, "Commissioner Long, he would fire me if I didn't remind you North Carolina had the lowest auto insurance rates in the South!"
Long served as Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal for 24 years.
He suffered a stroke nearly two weeks ago and passed away Monday.
He was 68.
Highlights of Long's funeral service are posted in our video clip.
