PTA Thrift Shop Affected by Recent Toy Regulations

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Barbara Jessie-Black, Executive Director of the PTA Thrift Shop, recently took all toys and child care products off of the shelves of the PTA Thrift Shops due to new requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). According to this regulation, resale or thrift shops are at increased liability by selling donated toys or children's products and are no longer accepting these donations.

The PTA Thrift Shop, in the hope that these regulations may be altered through legislation, has stored the children's products for now, avoiding adding to local landfills.

Although the economic downturn has affected the amount of donations, Jessie-Black is appreciative of the continued support from the local community. She recognized that in these economic times, people are more willing to give to organizations that serve their local communities, rather than sending their money out of the immediate area.

    Ughh, that is horrible.

I THINK that the issue is that many resale stores are just going ahead and pulling their children's items for liabilty sake. Barbara mentioned in the full interview that they received legal advice that it may be best to go ahead and pull the items, as each offense is rather severe.

I thought the law got put off until Feb 2010

I actually didn't realize that. I wonder why, because I can't imagine books and clothing have lead or the dangerous plastics. That really hurts local families.

Don't forget that books and children's clothing also fall under this law. This law is far more reaching than just plastic toys.
