The Chatham County School Board voted to lay off 11 teachers when they approved a budget Monday that cuts $2.4 million.
The 11 teacher cuts add up to about $600,000. In addition, they cut three career technical education teachers and four curriculum resources teachers, totaling another $400,000.
Superintendent Robert Logan said this is a local budget that will be presented to the Chatham County Commission.
The final decision relies on what the district receives from the state and the federal stimulus package. With that state and federal money, they may be able to reinstate positions in the final budget, Logan said.
"We also don't know about the state budget," he said. "The governor is releasing the state budget this week. But unless we have those two pieces of the puzzle, I'm presenting the board the worst-case scenario."
The rest of the cuts -- about $800,000 -- come from general operating costs, including $300,000 in maintenance costs.
