The N.C. State Highway Patrol's Operation Drive Smart 2009 is set to kickoff this week.
Drive Smart is an effort to reduce the number of traffic collisions in work zones. Highway Patrol troopers will set up enforcement in some of the busiest work zones in the state.
"Speeding is the leading cause of traffic collisions in work zones," said State Highway Patrol Commander Colonel Walter Wilson, Jr. in a press release. "I have instructed our Troopers to aggressively crack down on motorists traveling at high speeds and driving recklessly."
According to NCDOT, there were 2,381 work zone crashes resulting in nearly 1,500 injuries in 2008.
Operation Drive Smart will concentrate solely on speeding, aggressive driving and other traffic violations in work zones.
