Wake Technical Community College is proud to be the recipient of a 2009 “Green Building of America” Award from Construction Communications. Building D, on Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus, was chosen for the award from more than 2,500 entries. The building will be featured in a special edition of Real Estate & Construction Review, a leading publication among policy makers and leaders in finance and economic development.

Building D is the newest addition to Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus. At just under 75,000 square feet, the building features daylight harvesting - a system that detects the amount of light coming in from outside and automatically dims the inside lights accordingly to save energy. Occupancy sensors in rooms automatically turn lights off when no one is present. Building D also has a white roof to reflect the sun, sun-blocking louvers and roof overhang on the south side of the building, and high-efficiency condensing boilers, fan and pump motors.

The award is the latest in a string of honors for Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus, which opened for classes in the fall of 2007. It is the first college campus in the country to be all-LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The campus has also received the City of Raleigh’s 2009 Environmental Award, a 2008 Innovation of the Year Award from the League for Innovation and a 2008 Green Award from Triangle Business Journal.

Building D will open in August with 29 classrooms, including nine computer labs, two physics labs, two fine arts classrooms, a drama room, and a distance learning classroom, as well as a coffee shop for students and faculty.
