North Carolina artists need apply.
The City of Raleigh is looking for artists and teams to submit work for a temporary sculpture exhibition to be placed on Raleigh's new downtown plaza. The project is called Art on City Plaza.
Located in the 500 block of Fayetteville Street, City Plaza will officially open on Oct. 24 in conjunction with the Raleigh Wide Open 4 celebration. City Plaza will host concerts, markets, city celebrations, and arts events throughout the year.
Three artists will be selected to present sculptures for the inauguration of City Plaza. One piece will be installed on each of the concrete pedestals that are the centerpieces of three gateway planters on the plaza. Artists will be paid a $2,000 honorarium, and the City of Raleigh Arts Commission will cover all agreed upon costs associated with the transportation and installation of the artists' works.
To apply, artists must have resided in North Carolina for at least a year and be 18 years or older. Experienced artists familiar with the logistics of working with municipal teams and deadlines are encouraged to apply.
Submitted work may be in any media. Selection criteria include consideration of maintenance, safety, durability, and suitability for public display. Work selected for the temporary sculpture must be installed between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16, and be available for exhibition for one year.
The application deadline is Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. Additional information about Art on City Plaza, including submission guidelines, is available at www.artspacenc.org and on the City of Raleigh Arts Commission's webpage at www.raleighnc.gov/arts.
