Duke Energy customers will begin paying 5 percent more for electricity next month.
The North Carolina utilities commission approved the increase Wednesday to account for higher fuel costs.
Duke Energy spokesperson Paige Sheehan said it is the typical annual adjustment for fuel costs and that Duke Energy will not make a profit on the increase.
Sheehan said typically the increase is only a couple percent, but this year is slightly higher because more fuel was used last June 2008 --- the hottest June on record.
The percentage is based on predictions for future year's use, and a look back on the past year's use.
Customers can expect the average charge to go up $4.14.
Charlotte-based Duke Energy has more than 160,000 customers in the Triangle.
