Carolina midfielder Joseph Kabwe was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 17, the USL-1 announced Tuesday.
Kabwe is the 14th different RailHawk to be named to a Team of the Week in 2009, and it's also the fourth week in a row a RailHawk has been honored.
Kabwe scored the opening goal in Saturday's 3-0 win over Austin at WakeMed Soccer Park. In the 40th minute, after beating his man down the left wing, Gregory Richardson played a ball across the box and Kabwe knocked it in. It was Kabwe's second goal of the season and first since May 22. Kabwe had two other strong scoring chances in the match. He saw a 29th-minute chance go just wide, and his 71st minute blast was saved.
Kabwe has been in fine form during the last two matches. In addition to his goal on Saturday, he also had two assists in the RailHawks' 4-0 win over Miami on July 26. His start against Miami was his first appearance in a USL-1 match since June 27, when he entered the match against Puerto Rico in the 75th minute. He also had starts against Panama on June 30, where he played 71 minutes, and against Tecos on July 18, where he played 90 minutes.
"If you look at Joseph, he's been out of the team for a while," Carolina coach Martin Rennie said after Saturday's win over Austin. "He's coming back with two assists and a goal. He's performing. Guys who've not necessarily been in the lineup are coming in and playing well."
Kabwe and the RailHawks are currently in Rochester, N.Y., preparing for Wednesday's match with the Rhinos at Marina Auto Stadium. Carolina will be back at it at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, when they meet the Cleveland City Stars at 7 p.m.
