A new state education program is allowing North Carolinians to attend community college free of charge.
Under Gov. Bev Perdue's "JobsNOW: 12 in 6" program students can receive a certification in six months for one of 12 jobs.
The state's funneling $13.4 million federal into community colleges at a time when the state's unemployment rate's in the double digits.
The program offers training in career fields such as health care, carpentry and auto body repair.
The goal is to match training with job demand in specific markets.
Students will also learn to improve resume writing, interviewing, teamwork and communications skills.
Durham Technical Community College is hosting a free orientation for JobsNOW training.
Orientation begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Educational Resource center on the college's main campus.
