DURHAM, N.C. -

Need work?

Durham Technical Community College is hosting free orientation sessions tonight and tomorrow for its new "JobsNOW" training.

Thanks to federal recovery money, North Carolina's Community College system is offering certification training in as many as 12 careers in six months or less.

Durham Tech will offer training in the following areas: Nursing Assistant/Health Unit Coordinator, Green Landscape Designers/Solar Energy Technicians, Phlebotomist, Industrial Maintenance Technician, Medical Coder, Under Care Car Technician and Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical Process Technician.

Tonight's oriention session is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Educational Resources Center on Durham Tech's main campus.

A second session will be offered Wednesday 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Orange County campus building just outside Hillsborough.

Deyette Wall lost her pharmacuetical job in the recession.

So the graduate from Meredith College decided to return to school for a short term job training program.

"I know people are struggling right now and we need help.  So it's not just about a job, it's about a career," said Wall.

Within six months Wall will be certified as a nursing assistant and health unit coordinator.

Durham Tech can not guarantee her a job, but created this program around the needs of UNC Healthcare and Duke Medical Center.

Average pay for the position is around 18 dollars an hour.

"All of our programs were created around the needs of businesses in Durham.  So the select seven programs we have are targeted at local industry that is growing and there is a need for new employees," said Kelly King, Durham Tech's JobsNOW Coordinator.

The session costs between $800 to $1,100 dollars, however, financial assistance is available through local Joblink Centers.

"In our economic times, this program is vital," said Jamie Glass, Durham Tech's Vice President of Corporate and Continuing Education.  "It is offering the specific skills set, short gterm training for the needs of both Durham and Orange Counties.

The Nursing Assistant program begins Tuesday.

Certifications for Industrial Maintenance Technicians and Under Car Care will start on Sept. 28.

In October, Durham Tech will roll out programs in biotechnology and green jobs.
