You may have seen the commercials. In order to support local small businesses in the recent economic downturn American Express, in partnership with NBC Universal, is offering a $100,00 in grant and marketing support to one of thousands of small businesses nationwide that receive a nomination and enough endorsements to qualify. When a client of Harmony Pilates Studio in Apex heard about this campaign she immediately wrote in to nominate them for the award.
In her nomination she wrote,"Susan Simon radiates her vision for her clients in her eyes, in her manner, in her attention to every detail of their needs. To Susan, her clients' stories are her story, a joint journey through the path of well-being, mental, physical and spiritual. This is what I know of Susan in the few short weeks that I have been taking private lessons from her. I went to Susan because, like her, I, too, experienced postnatal health issues. Since giving birth to two beautiful boys, I have learned that the medical profession does not educate women on the importance of female pelvic fitness. It is not until something goes wrong that a woman may hear her physician ask her, "What, have you not been doing your Kegels?" The question and answer both come as a surprise to a woman, leaving her wondering, first, "What are Kegels?" and, next, "Why has my doctor not ever mentioned Kegel exercises to me?" When I spoke with Susan about my postnatal health history and that it was the reason I was seeking Pilates instruction to strengthen my core, her first reaction to my story was to say, "I am so glad you came to see me." Susan sat down next to me and told me about Pilates-based instruction that is especially tailored to improve a woman's pelvic region, beyond Kegels. Her energy and knowledge inspired me to take private lessons from her. Since taking private lessons, I have learned from Susan that she is hoping to expand her studio so that she may offer more classes to larger groups of women. Harmony Pilates Studio, in Apex, NC, offers more than just pre/post-natal classes. Susan Simon and her staff teach women how to handle life's changes with physical grace and inner strength through every stage of life. I see Susan Simon as a pioneer in women's fitness, and, for this reason, I decided to shine a light on Harmony Pilates Studio. Harmony Pilates Studio is pioneering women's fitness one small movement at a time."
"When we found out we were nominated by one of our clients for an opportunity to win we were deeply honored and grateful, says Susan Simon, business owner of Harmony Pilates Studio, Integrative Movement & Yoga for just 2 1/2 years now. While we don't do what we do for recognition, but rather for the sake of helping our client's reach their goals of achieving optimal heath, this kind of appreciation and recognition is so invaluable to us in helping to validate that we are true to our philosophy."
As soon as they heard the news they'd been nominated they immediately called upon friends and supporters of the studio to help them qualify through their endorsements. "While it would be so helpful especially in this economy to win such a grant from American Express, we are more focused on what this endorsement represents, validation and recognition for being good at what we do" says Susan.
Harmony Pilates Studio, Integrative Movement & Yoga recently relocated in Downtown Apex's historic Salem Street Promenade Building with Common Grounds Coffee Shop, EnV Hair Salon & Color Bar, and Blue Tiger Gift Shop. "We love our new location", "Our clients love the atmosphere of lofty ceilings, old brick walls, & the convenience of the other shops in the building. It's a truly remarkable setting that suits what we offer very well."
When Harmony moved to downtown Apex they were able to occupy a larger space that allowed them to expand their services to include Yoga, kids programming, and some dance forms such as Bellydance and Flamenco. "Our philosophy is to help individuals meet their personal goals of heath & fitness through movement. It's as simple as that, says Susan. Once the body learns how to move properly, with strength, support, and intelligence, it is ready to try other forms of movement. So if someone comes to us with back pain, for example, we show them how to move appropriately to get out of pain first. This involves core support, toning, and stretching methods. Then, once they can move better, they are able to condition in a cross discipline method trying other methods of movement patterning and enjoyment. We also focus on special groups such as kids, seniors, and pre & post natal. "There is nothing more rewarding to me than helping someone get out of pain and then to see them enjoy their life more fully."
