CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -

A suspect is dead and two Chatham County Sheriff Officers are injured after a chase lead to a shootout.

Gary Blankenship, public information officer for the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, says officials are investigating three incidents and is unsure if they are related.

A woman in Moore County called 911 Thursday afternoon saying someone shot at her home. Shortly after the call, a motorist phoned 911 saying someone shot at his car.

Officers were responding and noticed what they say was a "suspicious" vehicle that fit the description of the suspected vehicle from the second call. They ran the tags and attempted to pull over the behicle, however Blankenship says the car failed to do so and a chase ensued with speeds topping 90 mph.

Deputies used stop sticks to stop the car and a standoff ensued. The chase began at the Moore County line and ended in Siler City on Alston Bridge Road and Progress.

The suspect, David Scott Herring, 35 of Bear Creek, showed a gun and shots were exchanged between the suspect and two officers. Sgt. Chris Perry and Captain Roy Allen both suffered gun shot wounds to the leg and taken to Chatham Hospital where they remain in stable condition.

Herring was shot and killed; his body will be transported to UNC hospital for autopsy.

Officers took a second suspect into custody after he got out of the vehicle during the chase. He has since been released and will not be charged with anything at this time.
