MORRISVILLE, N.C. -

Some of the Triangle's busiest intersections need help with reducing traffic back-ups.

For example, Edwards Mill Road at Duraleigh in Raleigh can be a headache and is considered one of the worst.

Typically, fixing roads can be difficult and costs money, but a group of engineers, city leaders and business leaders met Thursday to find low-cost solutions to traffic problems.

"As we want to grow economically, we're going to have more traffic," Mike Fendrick, an engineer at a local firm.

Fendrick was at a solutions forum sponsored by the Regional Transportation Alliance, a group of local engineers, city and business leaders who volunteered time to find low-cost solutions to some big traffic problems.

"It's uniting everyone under one goal: to try and make transportation better in the area," Mike Surasky, an engineer at WSP Sells, said.

The group asked the town's to identify their worst intersections.

They received more than 35 submissions, but later lowered the list down to 10.

"We asked them [if they] would be willing to take a fresh look at these intersections," RTA Executive Director Joe Milazzo II said. "Then we asked them which intersections they would like us to look at."

The most expensive suggestion was $1.5 million, but most were relatively simple.

Just by improving signal times and coordination, towns could save residents nearly half a minute.

At Cary Parkway and Chapel Hill (or NC-54), engineers estimate a full minute of time could be saved simply by using existing pavement to re-stripe a right turn lane onto Cary Parkway.

"Sometimes the subtle things can get you home faster," Milazzo said. "That's a good thing."
