RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina residents need to be careful about what they put in their trash cans starting Thursday.

A new law taking effect Oct. 1 bans plastic bottles from landfills as a way to encourage recycling and reduce the amount of trash in the ground.

Chris Frazier with the Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance says state regulators won't rummage through people's trash. Some local government sanitation departments say they won't pick up trash that contains the plastic bottles until they are separated.

"Just because you can no longer dispose of plastic bottles and pallets in landfills does not make it okay to burn them," said Sheila Holman, deputy director of the N.C. Division of Air Quality. "It is always illegal to burn plastics, paper and other trash in North Carolina."

Portions or all of more than 90 other laws also take effect Thursday. Some are designed to help protect more residents from identity theft, foreclosures, unwanted telephone solicitations and false concert advertising.

Just like the government to attack the symptom and not the problem. Just make plasic bottles against the law, glass was beautiful.

What is it with all you right wing nuts? If you hate government so much move to another country. Stupid statements like the guy who claims he does not use public roads, police or fire just shows the ignorance of those that hate so much it clouds everything they see and do. So if you hate it that much move. Property taxes are found in almost all states. And whether to date you have used the police or the fire does not mean it is not important. I bet you have insurance covering that house you are paying property taxes on? I don't hear you complaining about that. As for the new law, those who suggest deposits, it does cut down on trash, but it is a filthy dirty mess to keep those bottles and cans, and then to bring them into a store for your money back. You'd quickly be complaining about that as well. Probably more so than a law asking you to be responsible as an adult and care something about the environment and what you will leave for your children who based on your attitudes will probably hate just like you. Why not for once take some responsibility and just recycle.

NC needs to implement a 5 or 6ยข bottle return. The, people would be taking this seriously.

The local trash dump/recycle center. Throws them all into the same bin. So why should I seperate them????????

  • By Robert on 09/30 04:54 PM

Well I pay taxes and don't send my child to public school, don't use the trash pick up (why would you when we have a dump 2 miles away with re cycling on site), don't use the police, fire, roads, or anything else that my $11,000.00 per year in property tax covers. But hey, as long as people like you get to spout off and we can keep the emergency room filled with illegals that don't pay, i guess your happy.

Plastic and aluminum would go away with a deposit for each item high enough to justify returning them, even the roads and woods would be free of them especially since millions of people are trying to make ends meet without a job, hell i guess i am lazy but i to would pick them up. Does anyone know the other 90 plus laws, maybe just a few of them? I would hate to get a ticket for having a tear in my jeans just because i didn't know the law. Politicians exempt of course.

Mary, If you think it's unfair to charge a fee to city people for the collection in rural areas, consider this: I pay for the bus system, yet I have no access to it. I pay for the train studies, yet it won't do me any good. I pay for the city schools, city police, downtown theater, museums, etc through state subsidies yet they only benefit city people. So who is it that only thinks of themself?

  • By rural res on 09/30 03:10 PM

Mary, Who is only thinking of themselves, you or people opposed to the law? If you live in the city it's real easy to do. I have no recycling site anywhere near-by, so if I separate plastics, I have to drive 20 miles to recycle them. Of course people like you that only see things from one side, probably also want me to pay more gas tax for the gas I will use to get there. How about we test to see how sincere you are by putting the burden on city people for a change. The county can pick up the plastics in rural areas and charge a fee to city people to cover the cost.... or do you think it's only ok to put a burden on other people?

Mary & Mike still waiting on the other 90 plus laws.

  • By Mary on 09/30 02:43 PM

Well said, Mike. After recycling and composting, I hardly have anything left over to put in my trash bin. If everyone would just think a little more about the impact their actions have on the world around them instead of just thinking of themselves, then we wouldn't have to pass laws to make people do the right thing.

  • By alan on 09/30 02:36 PM

Do you have a clue this is just another government law that they think justifies their existence. They should all be fired. Can you tell me the other 90 plus laws that go into affect Thursday, i bet not. If you consider an opinion an act of laziness than obviously you don't know the working class. You must be a politician or a want to be.

  • By Mike on 09/30 02:20 PM

Seriously people? It's not that difficult. We have two bins, one for garbage and one for recycling. The variety of recyclable materials is vast, and we're just talking about plastic freakin bottles here...come on. Is this law hurting you? Everybody knows you recycle those and soda cans, although common sense is apparently pretty rare and laziness prevails. Awesome job guys.

  • By alan on 09/30 02:00 PM

We already have more laws than any one person can keep track of what a state success story i bet you neither person that passed these laws could tell you 50% of them, you should be proud. Just as usual the state/federal government attacking the citizens when they should be regulating the producer. Why would anyone expect anything different, maybe requiring a deposit high enough to eliminate the issue or maybe not allowing this type of product in the state to start with, sounds to simple let's just have our citizens take care of our stupidity. By the way maybe you could just raise the taxes some more it works for California or we can borrow from other countries. Thanks China for eliminating all our jobs and lending us all the money you can so for generations to come will owe you. Do you speak Chinese you better learn if not?

we're not going to separate these! this is bs. let them go through my trash. i have more important things to worry about!
