The Youth For Western Civilization at UNC hosted its first conservative speaker of the school year Thursday night, only this time it was not interrupted by angry protesters.
Members of the Protesters Defense Committee did gather in the auditorium's lobby to demonstrate against Haley Koch's arrest several months ago after she and others interrupted Tom Tancredo's speech by chanting loudly and and unrolling a large banner in front of Tancredo so he could not finish his speech. Koch was arrested 9 days after the incident for disorderly conduct. Last month a judge dropped the charge against her.
Thursday, members protested quietly in the audience as Bay Buchanan talked about her position on illegal immigration and being pro-life. Buchanan is a conservative political commentator and was the Treasurer of the United States under President Ronald Reagan.
YWC members said they expected to see protesters at the speech, but this time did not feel they were out of line.
"They believe what they believe and they're doing what Bay Buchanan is doing on the other side," said Devin Miller, YWC member. "I think tonight is a lot more civil then what we experienced last year."
