ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. -

The Old Well- the visual symbol for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill- could end up on a rifle's stock.

Historical Armory, a Colorado company, is advertising a $499.99 Orange County Limited Historical Edition Rifle.

The guns would feature an engraved design that includes the Old Well, flags, a cannon, and a deer.

Carrboro Mayor and UNC-CH graduated Mark Chilton found out about the design when a friend emailed him an advertisement for the rifles.

"Schools and guns really don't mix," he said, recalling shootings on or near college campuses. "I don't see the logic of putting the symbol of our flagship university on a gun."

Chilton also wonders if the use of the Old Well is legal. The Old Well image is trademarked by the university.

A university spokesperson said Historical Armory was not given permission to use the image, and that it's licensing agent, Collegiate Licensing, Co, is looking into the matter.

Paul Brunswig, owner of Historical Armory, said he has not been asked or told not to include the Old Well in the rifle's design. He said the design is an artist's original work, not a duplication of the university's symbol.

In a statement, Brunswig said: "Historical Armory is a small business made of historians and artists with a passion for American history. We enjoy the challenge of telling our nation's history in visual images. It is a history we are proud of and we feel lucky to have a chance to learn the history of our nation's counties."

GIVE.....ME.....A......BREAK! We have come so far from our roots and traditions - to the point that "Gun" elicits a knee jerk attribution to violence, fear and scorn? 99.9 % of firearms owners and collectors are law abiding, pillars of the community, who happen to enjoy hunting, plinking and collecting. And yes, it is very Southern and very American. Why is Mark Chilton popping off about UNC? I think there are enough significant issues in Carrboro that merit his attention above this issue. Must everything and everyone agree with him and be "PC"? In sum: I'll keep my guns and my religion, thank you.
