Cary Town Council members gave a green light for a task force to do an in-depth review of the town's restrictive sign ordinance.
More than 15 people were asked to weigh in on potential changes.
"They're fairly strict as far as requirements," Rucker's Pizza, Pasta and Spirits Managing Partner Ryan Pilz said.
Pilz said he'd love to put up a banner advertising his lunch specials, but the town is less than flexible on signs.
"I don't know how city of Cary has so many well paid efficient employees, but (signs are) gone within like 15 minutes," Pilz said.
The sign ordinance has size requirements, color restrictions, font uniformity and a host of other restrictions, but now the town is forming a task force to review its policy.
The first meeting of the task force is set for November.
They will present their recommended changes to the council in March.
"It's more restrictive than Raleigh is, but i tell you they all have their own nuances," Jeremy Weitzel, owner of AllKindsa Signs, said.
In additions to Rucker's, Weitzel's done signs for Brueggers Bagels, YoHo Asian Bistro and several other signs in the Tryon Village shopping center.
Weitzel is one of the people who will be on the force.
"I'm hoping that Cary really wants to take it, as I like to say full tilt bozo, and really look at the whole thing," Weitzel said.
One of the things that sparked the review were complaints from realtors who were unable to advertise like they wanted for homes on the market.
Realtors say it's hard to sell when people don't know the homes are there, but they also need the town to look nice in order to sell homes.
"Cary has always had a great reputation for its aesthetics in the town and no one wants to jeopardize that," Tara Lightner, Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors Government Affairs Director, said.
The task force will be charged with finding that balance between allowing business owners to advertise and keeping the community pretty.

I support Cary's sign ordinances. Two years ago we moved to Pittsburgh from the Triangle and you cannot believe how unattractive and distracting all the signs are here, even in the upscale northern suburbs. I really miss the look of the Triangle and think that it was easier to find the stores and businesses I was looking for without all the junky signs in my face.
