More than 600 students in Garner went the extra mile today for their school. Today was the 20th annual Rand Road Run at Rand Road Elementary School.
Kids and teachers were joined by Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams and County Commissioner Lindy Brown as they did laps around the track as part of the fundraising event, which has raised more than $200,000 for the school over the years.
"Over the last 20 years, we've bought all our playgrounds that we've had.. we have 3 now," said Michael Rhodes, Rand Road Elementary P.E. teacher. "We've created a soccer field on the back side of the school. We've made a track and actually, three years ago, we paved the track."
Students collect pledges and the PTA gets donations from local businesses to support the run. Rhodes said it's a great way to encourage the kids to be more physically fit and to get the community involved in the school.

There should be more schools willing to go the extra mile! What a great idea! When other school are wringing their hands and wondering how to "get" state funds from our "Education Lottery" (What a scam!)(notice I said get not earn) these students, teachers, parents and commnity come together for a common good and of course it is the future. For every child that benifits from activities like these will remember and as adults will get involved with their kids future! Super job!
