CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A summit at Duke University and the University of North Carolina will address whether the recession has disproportionately affected blacks.

The African-American Economic Summit will be Sunday at the Chapel Hill school and Monday in Durham.

Discussions will cover topics including housing, education, labor, wealth, health and incarceration as they relate to blacks and their communities. After each day's discussions, experts will meet privately to draft policy recommendations that will be sent to

Gov. Beverly Perdue and President Barack Obama.

The summit is sponsored by UNC's Institute of African-American Research and Duke's Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality.

Blacks have been given everthing to help them in life Pell Grants, Affimative action, Section 8 housing, and either you abuse it or don't appreciate anything to help you. There is know other race in the USA that gets more for nothing than you Black do.

I think you're both extremist. I hope you each keep an open mind and attend/have attended one of the the summits, so you can see the findings. NC 172, you seem far too quick to say there is no problem, before looking at any empirical data. And, Levita--although your intentions may have been good, it seems you've taken the 'woe is me' approach regarding the status of African-Americans in America. I, personally, wish the article had given more pertinent information - exact location of the summits, time(s), etc. because I'm very much interested in attending one of them. I'm going to search for that information online now because I would like to hear the findings. I don't want to hear the 2 minute News version of the findings, on Monday night. I want to hear for myself, first hand, what the findings are/were. I believe all Americans should be interested in this data.

give me a break! in the states you have every chance to do anything you want, all you have to do is work hard and if you keep it up you can accomplish almost anything. with the laws we have now there is nothing holding anyone back. sure not to long ago is was not the same but stop trying to blame something that has nothing to do with the current problem. i don't see how attitudes can change anymore than they have in OUR country. also this "summit" is going to talk about "whether the recession has disproportionately affected blacks," that's whether it has happened, not that it has.

Black people hve been at the back of the line economicallly, educationally, and in everything else that matters in this society for the last three hundred years. True there has been some progress, but as a people we seem to allways be just three or four steps behind everybody else. Untill attitudes change in this country black people will never attain any more than we have now, we will continue to entertain and amuse the masses and the few who are lucky enough to have these talents will reap the benifits in the mean time the rest of us will just have "to make do"
