BioSignia CEO John Williams said "The Biggest Loser" television show now focuses on more than just losing weight. They also help contestants get healthy using a program called Know Your Number developed by his company.
"What started out as small talk is now a product that is on a national show weekly," Williams said.
He hopes the show can turn his product into a household name.
"It gives them a road map for how they can control their destiny for the risk of cronic diseases," Williams said.
Diseases like diabetes, stroke and high cholesterol.
On the show, they promote the consumer kit home addition where people can send away for the supplies and give all their information, including a blood sample. They then send the completed packet back to the company where the risks are calculated. Consumers can go online and see their results.
"I think for a lot of people it's an eye opening experience. They may think they are a healthy 30- or 40-year-old but but these numbers may prove differently," pharmacist Sara Dawson said.
Locally, people can go into Kerr Drug to get the test done and calculated by pharmacists using the program.
"So patients come in and we do their height, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol," Dawson said.
The results show the overall wellness of the patient, then pharmacists will give them advice on how to change things that can be improved.
"It may say you have a 50 percent risk but 20 percent of that is because your overweight, you need to exercise more," Dawson said.
Kent Barlow said the test can help him live a longer, healthier life.
"Anything you can do to improve health is a step in the right direction," Barlow said.
Fans of the show can get just as healthy as their favorite loser by getting the kit online or by heading to Kerr Drugs.
