The judge told Chris Kearney that he is under strict guidelines to not consume alcohol or drugs unless prescribed by a doctor.
Kearney was charged with driving drunk, crashing into Carolyn Kubitschek and Cassy Lesawyer and fleeing the scene.
According to the Chapel Hill Police watch commander, the automobile Kearney is alleged to have been driving veered off the road in the 200 block of Columbia Street in Chapel Hill shortly before 2:30 a.m. It then hit a wall and truck Kubitsch and Lesawyer on the sidewalk.
Kubitschek and Lesawyer, who are also UNC students, were transported to UNC's North Carolina Memorial Hospital. Both are in fair condition.
Kearney, who earned a spot on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2008 All-America Team, will withdraw this semester from UNC and go back to Irvine, Calif. with his family according to the family attorney Amos Tyndall.
"They're devastated they're very sad and very concerned about the two girls that were hurt. Just, their thoughts and prayers are with those girls and wishing, obviously wishing he had made better choices," Tyndall said.
UNC Men's Head Tennis Coach Sam Paul also expressed concern.
"Chris (Kearney) has been a member of our tennis program for the last two years and is a good person who has made a serious mistake," he said in a statement. "I talk to my players all the time about making good decisions. As coaches, we are always worried about the dangers associated with drinking and driving and with alcohol in general."
Kearney’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 28.
Evidence of the accident was still on the scene late Sunday afternoon. Scattered stone, a pair of shoes and the grill of a car were on the ground. Gregorio Urbina, a senior at UNC, was walking near the site of the accident Sunday morning when he heard the tires screech.
"As soon as I heard screeching, and the first thing I saw, which was ridiculous, was the car vertically, like as soon as it hit the wall it was vertical,” Urbina said.
Debris from the accident landed as far as 50 feet away in the driveway of Brian Murray's business, Tar Heel Takeout.
"I’m just flabbergasted at how far the wall has traveled,” Murray said.
He said North Columbia Street is always busy, but students just returning from summer break changes the dynamic there.
"There's definitely a doubling, a tripling of traffic,” Murray said.
Police will have to determine exactly what happened and students will have to start the school year with a tough lesson.
Kearney is charged with two counts of inflicting personal injury, one count of driving while impaired, two counts of possessing a fake ID, felony hit and run causing personal injury and consuming alcohol under the age of 21.
Police said that Kearney blew a .018 on a breath alcohol test.
Dick Baddour, UNC's director of athletics released a statement regarding the incident.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the students who were injured, and their families, as well as Chris and his family. We pray that they have a full recovery. This is a horrible way for a new school year to begin. We are shocked and saddened and deeply sorry that one of our student-athletes is involved in this type of accident," said Baddour.
UNC Sophomore Corey Shores said he knows of Kearney through friends.
"I have a friend who's on the tennis team and they were just down in Atlanta working really hard for this coming ACC tournament," Shores said. "We can definitely build back from this you know; we're the greatest university in the world."
